Week 1 - Hoop.
So it turns out even getting on to the hoop to sit up on it takes a crazy amount of muscle and strength. Having to do a pull up whilst swinging your legs behind you in straddle, folding them over the bar and then pulling yourself from hanging to sitting using mainly your stomach muscles is a lot harder then it sounds... Ha... :|
Week 1 - Trapeze
It's so much easier getting up onto a trapeze, because whilst you work up your strength to pull yourself up you can just sort of jump and hook your leg up onto it hoping it doesn't swing around to much.
Week 2 - Hoop
I carried on, still struggling to try to get up properly. But in the rare moments that I did get up I managed to sit up along with learning a few other movements including 'The Man in the Moon' which I felt was pretty relevant considering we are currently working on 'The Girl Who Fell in Love With The Moon'.
Week 2 - Trapeze
I learnt a position called 'The Birdsnest' which looks pretty cool, if I do say so myself. However the first time I tried my hands slipped of the bar and I fell on my head. That was when I learnt about the power of hand chalk.
Week 3 - Hoop
Today I learnt the transitions between a few positions to make a small routine of what I had achieved so far. I also learnt to do a back balance which includes having to wriggle the hoop from your bum to the bottom of your back then trying to let go and not fall to your possible death. It's sexy, I promise.
Week 3 - Trapeze
We spent a lot of today doing conditioning. Conditioning is when you do a load of muscle strengthening and stretching on the trapeze. Having danced a lot in the past, and being used to aches and pains after a tough class, I thought I'd be used to it... I have never felt next day pain like it. When I say next day pain I mean pain that lasted for nearly a week.
Week 4 - Hoop
When you get to Christmas time at dance what usually happens is some cheesy Christmas music comes on and we all get into groups and make dances up. Yes, that is actually a thing. And I have missed that, as cheesy as it may be. So you can imagine the joy I felt when I walked into my last lesson to the sound of Mariah Carey blasting out on the speakers and was given the instructions to create a Hoop routine from what I had learnt that term.
Week 5 - Silks
Just got back from Christmas break - I totally lost all the strength I had previously built up. I had a go on Silks which was incredibly hard and I attempted to climb up the silks. When I got back onto the hoop though my muscle memory just came flooding back to me. I went over what I had learnt before Christmas and then learnt how to transition from a back balance, to a wine glass, to front balance and then off.
So that's my diary so far. I am currently continuing with my training in one to one session which have more than doubled my skills because they are super focused and tailored around my abilities. I am really enjoying developing a new skill that I can bring to my work with The Zoo and beyond...
