Thank you Croydon !
Across 6 (mostly) glorious days in August The Human Zoo Theatre Company brought a theatre tent to Surrey Street Market in Croydon. We had an incredible time and met over 1000 people. Events varied from Poetry Takeout to a Puppet Zoo, dancing Drag Kings to a MESSY mayhem of a show. We only got rained off once and even then, the Croydon audience kept cheering; one little girl seemed so enthralled she didn't seem to notice that she had become a human dam, stopping the river of water that had started flowing under our electric equipment and through the middle of the tent! The big finale to the six days was the Surrey Street Experience, a live response to our time on the market, including a gallery of Poems and paintings, a live artist and this beautiful video made by Zoo Animal Nick. Take a look, it really does encapsulate what an incredible place Surrey Street and indeed Croydon is!
We'll be back!
We had such a brilliant response to our time on Surrey Street that the Council have invited us back!
We'll be joining the newly reopened Sunday Market on 4 Sundays across the coming months. Dates are confirmed but we're still waiting to announce what theatrical delights we'll have in store. This time we'll be collaborating with even more Croydon based arts organisations and we can't wait to get back out onto the streets of Croydon and meet as many of you as possible!
The Human Zoo Theatre Company, Croydon’s resident theatre organisation, are proud to present ‘Theatre on The Market’, bringing innovative, fresh and free theatre experiences to the country’s oldest fruit and veg market on Surrey Street. This exciting venture is supported by Croydon Council.
Sunday 24th September
Sunday 1st October
Sunday 5th November
Sunday 3rd December
The Sunday market will be full of street food, craft stalls and artisan products. Just like all the hardworking stall holders, we'll be there come rain or shine, so come on down, pick up a cake and pull up a chair in our theatre tent!
Why Surrey Street?
The Human Zoo Theatre Company are based at TMRW Hub, right in the heart of croydon’s growing creative community. Their intention is to make theatre in unusual, non-theatre spaces in Croydon whilst the Fairfield Halls is under development, in order to serve local communities and find new ways of putting the arts on the menu for more of Croydon’s locals. They are also supporting the redevelopment of the Croydon Arts Network, by hosting events for local creatives to come together to strengthen Croydon’s creative community.
By building a ‘Theatre on The Market’, Human Zoo very much hope to reach new audiences, and to begin to address the idea that the arts are only for those who can afford to buy a ticket. Theatre on The Market is sure to be a fun, creative and joyful snippet of entertainment for anybody (kids or no kids!) who decides to venture down to Surrey Street.
